Shuttleworth Design's autonomous sailing vessel takes unmanned transportation technology to new heights -- the growing industry has quickly evolved in recent years with concepts like self-driving cars and smart drones.

The company is working to build a full-sized, fully autonomous sailing vessel for the first time in the world. The plan is for the vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 2020 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailings from Plymouth, England to North America. Appropriately, the project will be named the 'Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship' or MARS.

Measuring 100 feet in length, the autonomous sailing vessel uses wind and solar technology for propulsion. With this technology, the vessel will be able to have unlimited range, making it almost completely self-sufficient. Furthermore, drone experiments will be conducted on board the ship during the voyaging process in order to ensure its features are safe for future passengers.
