A Mobile Automatic Licence Plate Recognition System is now offered in British Columbia. It can capture up to 3,000 license plates per hour. It consists of three cameras placed outside of the police car, one from the left which capture license plates of oncoming vehicles, one from the right which is used to capture license plates of cars in the right-hand lane also cars parked on the right side of the road and another from the rear right-angle which captures the license plates of parked cars in a parking lot.

The squad car need only cruise down a parking lot lane and it will alert the officer if any of the plates are a match with an "audible signal." The information is immediately brought up on the on-board computer's display, telling the cop everything he needs to know about that suspect car. It's efficient too, as the ALPR can handle up to 3000 plates an hour (that's almost one a second). (mobilemag)
