A 59-year-old man in Australia was recuperating from prostate cancer surgery and sprinkled Viagra on oysters to boost his recovery. It worked so well that he called upon local watermen and oyster farmers to discuss the viability of feeding Viagra to growing oysters. The group formed a company named “ViagraOysters,” but Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra is threatening a law suit if they don’t change the company name. Additionally, Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) food authority says its “unlikely that Viagra Oysters will be approved for sale in Australia,” since the oysters contain trace amounts of sildenafil citrate, a chemical that is the active ingredient in the prescription drug, Viagra. (I can see it all now, “Happy Hour” for seniors at the local raw bars in Asia.)  A group of NSW oyster farmers are attempting to chemically boost the aphrodisiac qualities of their oysters — by feeding them Viagra.
The farmers have patented the process and are now preparing to export to the Asian market, which they estimate could be worth $220 million dollars, but their use of the Viagra trademark in their marketing has drawn the ire of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, setting up a David and Goliath-style showdown.
