Jason de Caires Taylor is an artist who creates unique sculptures in the most unlikely of places: underwater. His sculptures are situated in clear, shallow waters to afford easy access by divers and snorkelers. Caires Taylor’s unique aquatic installations are otherworldly, enigmatic, and astoundingly beautiful; the artist’s sculptures create artificial reefs and people are invited to discover the beauty of our underwater planet and to appreciate the processes of reef evolution.  Depending on the weight and design of the sculptures most are deployed from a vessel with a lifting arm. Once in the water float bags are attached and the piece(s) can be carefully lifted and moved into the final position. Larger pieces are made in separate units and then connected underwater. Anchoring screws are used to connect the base of the piece to the ocean substrate. The whole operation can take up to ten crew members and five divers. The largest piece Vicissitudes took me a week (four hours per day) underwater to assemble.
