Amelia Earhart Mystery to be Investigated - More Clues Surface
[Edit]
Almost 70 years after Amelia Earhart disappeared, clues are surfacing that might explain what actually happened that July morning in 1937 when she took off from Lae, New Guinea, on a flight to Howland Island in the South Pacific. She and Navigator, Fred Noonan, had taken off from Oakland, CA, 44 days earlier to begin a journey that could have made aviation history – the first flight around the world. However, the couple disappeared during the 2,550 miles between Lae and Howland.
Following the same longitude, speculation has them landing at one of the islands beyond Howland: Baker, McKean or Gardner, and dying as castaways.
A diary, kept by an Associated Press (AP) reporter was just discovered last September. As a result, expeditions by aviation researchers are planned for this coming July to investigate all of the leads that have turned up over the years.
