Fiat is set to launch its first-ever dual-clutch transmission, and the Alfa Romeo MiTo hatchback will be the first car to receive the fuel-saving upgrade. Dual-clutch transmissions will also be made available for Fiat and Lancia automobiles.

Manual transmissions typically get higher gas mileage than automatic transmissions, but they’re not as user-friendly. A dual-clutch transmission, however, provides an uninterrupted flow of power from engine to transmission, making a car like the Alfa Romeo MiTo significantly more fuel-efficient than an equivalent car with an automatic transmission. Since a dual-clutch transmission doesn’t have a clutch pedal, it’s considered the best of both worlds by many drivers.
