One has only ever dreamed of being able to fly half way across the world in as little time as possible. Being in a cramped little seat next to Jabba the hut for 10 hrs is not ideal. However LAPCAT (Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies) is a project funded by Europa General R&D;that can make this a not to distant reality.

Europa General R&D;’s goal is to produce a plane that can fly half way across the world in a very, very short period of time. So far that goal looks a lot brighter thanks to their A2 Mach 5 Civil Transport Concept. This concept, compliments of Reaction Engines, combines two very different, very cool pieces of technology.

Numero uno. Hydrogen powered engine concept that would not only kick my ass but by the sounds of it everyone’s ass in Calgary. This little speed demon of an engine would power the plane up to speeds of Mach 5.

Numero Duo. The Body of the Beast, its A2 Airframe. This fine architecture will be able to withstand Mach 5 turbulences and carry up to 300 passengers.

So when you think about it, in the end there is no downside. Travel far, fast and reduce your carbon footprint drastically by travelling emission free. Hopefully we can see this soon, and when we do I predict the whole face of air travel will “take off” for the better.

Long haul flights are a drag, but look at the lack of commercial success of the concorde. Kudos for the green energy source.
