Are we going to see a 1.8 kilometer long ship train crossing the Arctic Ocean in a few years? The ice on the North Pole is rapidly melting away leaving an open Arctic Ocean. And at the same time, leaving open new opportunities. 13 Scandinavian students from various disciplines were hand picked to work on the concept “Sustainable adaption to climate change – Arctic opportunities and threats”. They chose the year 2050, by which the Arctic Ocean will be completely ice free and came up with a solution they call AMV Njord - Arctic Modular Vessel, named after Njord, the Nordic god of the ocean.
The ship is designed like a train and consists of several 200 meter long modules that combined can be up to 1.8 kilometers long. Each module has a sail attached that catches wind in 300 meters height. Additional to that, the ship has hydrogen fuel cells powering 200 meter long propulsion units with submersible propeller thrusters. The concept has passed critical reviews and been admired for innovation.
When the concept was presented at DNV’s head office, representatives of three Norwegian ministries had asked to be allowed to attend and shipping companies, equipment suppliers and others in the maritime industry were represented. There was also a great deal of interest within DNV. The students had to give their presentation twice so that everyone could see it.
