In what is a win/win for everyone involved, the Gallopalooza event, which started in 2004, is a huge hit.

Gallopalooza is the presentation of large, life-sized fiberglass horses painted by mostly local artists in the general Louisville, KY area.

Each horse is sponsored by local Louisville businesses, and are placed strategically around the city during Derby season.

Those artists participating in painting the horses receive a commission between $1,000-$1,500, while those winning for the best horses win even more cash.

A number of charities also greatly benefit from the initiative, as hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised and distributed.

I have grown to hate this stuff. It was clever and original (I think it started in Chicago with painted pigs) but then every arts group in the country grabbed on to it: pigs, horses, cars, dogs, cows, ad nauseum. And the companies started hiring pros to do the art.
