The combination is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) resin, and is commonly called ‘vinyl’ for short. It’s mostly made of elements from common salt, so it is easier on the environment than some materials. Still, 43% of its make-up is petroleum-based, so it’s not the ‘perfect’ material. First invented in 1920 when “living better through chemistry” was the motto of the day, scientists wanted a cost-effective, durable material from which to make everyday products. It can be recycled.
