Windswept looks do a few things very well that are hard to pull off with more placid techniques. For one, they evoke a natural sense of motion and energy. Of course, movement can be conveyed through other means, but this often involves much more set design, posing and planning; as such, photographers, models and designers run the risk of contrivance -- nobody wants to look like they're trying too hard in a fashion shoot.

Windswept hair is hard to fake. Beyond fashion, gale-force conditions provide for some pretty quirky portraiture and unusual facial expressions.
