From Rock Wall Billboards to Crowdsourced Car Ads

These examples of dynamic outdoor billboards are a far cry from static advertisements of the past. In order to compete with other more engaging forms of advertising, large-scale billboards are being redesigned with highly interactive and responsive elements.

For instance, McDonald's set up a billboard that displayed an image of a whipped cream-topped drink where the height of the topping was altered to reflect expected amount of expected snowfall. While this design responds to environmental factors, Netflix created a series of ads for its Daredevil series that allowed the public to modify the appearance of the billboards through Twitter.

Creative billboard advertisements like these embrace theatrical elements and give consumers a reason to keep their eyes on them and share what they see.
