Grand Finale of Carnival in Rio Features Parade of Feathers + Glitter

Rio de Janeiro’s viral 2009 pre-Easter Carnival wrapped up with the annual grand Gay Gala Ball.

This is a similar, but more lavish celebration than Mardi Gras in North America. This year, more than a half-million Brazilians and tourists gathered in Rio de Janeiro’s Ipanema Beach for the last street party, the Samba Parade and Ipanema Band.

Music at the Rio Carnival is samba. It is uniquely Brazilian music that originated in Rio and a dance form invented and perfected by poor Afro-Brazilians.

The Gay Gala Ball is in its 29th year. Male participants arrived at the party in glitter, evening gowns, sexy lingerie, and feathered head pieces.
