Depressingly Warped Oil Paintings
Artist Yang Na Captures Female Angst Beautifully in Her Oil Work

By: Andrew Sztein (Star) Mar 3, 13

One of the beautiful things about art is that the meaning can change from viewer to viewer; rarely is that artistic sentiment more true than by taking a look at Chinese artist Yang Na’s compelling work.

All of the images and illustrations in Yang Na’s portfolio are done using oil paint on canvas. The exaggerated features, caricature-sized heads with tiny bodies, detailed eyes and depressing subject matter all seem to capture the female angst that comes with trying to stay beautiful. That’s my personal observation of the art at least, which is challenging to decipher, but beautiful to look at. Since all of the websites showcasing Yang Na’s work only have images or are in Chinese, the images are left mysterious and to speak to each viewer individually, which is just the way art should be.
