Curious to know how letters in the alphabet came to be, Jason Novak created a series of drawings titled ‘Where Letters Came From’ that depict the origins of A, B, C and D.

The Oakland-based cartoonist takes the familiar letters that one encounters on a daily basis and explains their origins by creating different humorous scenarios. For instance, the letter E came into being from the image of a man standing with his arms in the air. The letter L is a shepherd who unfortunately is very rough with his sheep. The pictures provide a silly, but not unlikely guess at what might have inspired the typography of the alphabet.

The explanations that Novak provides for his Where Letters Came From illustrations is very similar to Egyptian hieroglyphs, which used pictures to provide meaning.
