Aircraft-Inspired Crematoria
Vermilion Sands is a Futuristic Launch Pad for the Recently Deceased

{SummaryTitle}

Funeral homes are sometimes designed to be monumental, but few are constructed in a style that’s quite as audacious as the Vermilion Sands Crematorium. Shen Li certainly did not opt for the conventional concept of serenity or comfort in this project, rather working to establish a new and courageous type of architecture that deals with such momentous events in life.

Inspiration for the unusual structure was taken from airplanes. The masses are low and broad and are sculpted with smooth and aerodynamic shapes. They seem to suggest the wings and the body of an aircraft that sits in an empty landscape on an expansive runway by the sea. In the Vermilion Sands Crematorium, the reception area is like the fuselage and the crematory is the cockpit.
