The ‘Taking the Chair’ exhibition portrays an array of classic paintings that have been given an upgrade by transforming the pieces into photographic form.
The Taking the Chair series was executed by mother and daughter Caroline Maisie and Maud Broadhead who collaborated together on the photos. Several famous artists’ work such as Vermeer and Margritte are featured and mimicked. As you may have guessed from the title, each of these paintings were specifically chosen by the duo because of the original artists’ noticeable use of chairs.
Each of the six pieces have been brought to life and altered with subtle additions and alterations, which give the photos a more modernistic feel. The ability for the artists to take these serious paintings and add a humorous and lighthearted character to the portraits is what makes them truly stand out.
