Self-Propelled Structures
Theo Jansen Presents the 'Strandbeest' Sculpture

{SummaryTitle}

‘Strandbeest’ is a self-propelled structure created by Theo Jansen, and the creation is, for lack of better words, out of this world. This man-made eco-creature is comprised of bottles and other recyclable materials, and is self-propellant powered only by the wind. The Strandbeest has artificial intelligence built into it which enables it to change course, or vary its path based on obstructions and similar difficulties using a simple step counting device.

Theo Jansen was showcased on TED talks in 2007, and explained the idea behind Strandbeest before culminating its inception. Theo claims on his website that these creations actually “walk on wind,” and states that “these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements.” He explains that his ultimate goal is “to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.”

It may seem like scary stuff, but these insect-evoking skeletons are quite simple, and a function of perseverance and creativity. Strandbeest is most definitely a sight to see, so look out, it might one day be at a beach near you.
