Submerged Subway Shoots
Stephen Mallon Documents the End of the Line in his Photography

{SummaryTitle}

Photographer Stephen Mallon’s recent series ‘Next Stop Atlantic’ is an intriguing look at the disposal of retired subway cars. The photographs show the large metallic vehicles being thrown into the choppy waters of the Atlantic, forever surrendered to the ocean. Underneath the waves, the cars will become the homes of brine and fish. This is an odd way for something that has spent its entire life underground to end its service.

It is surreal to see such familiar vehicles being carried out to sea on giant barges and plunged into the frothy, cold waves; such scenes are reminiscent of a Hollywood disaster-themed movie. Mallon has done a good job at finding the drama in a subject many people wouldn’t think of.
