When I first set eyes on the Smart Chair by Julien Bergignat, I had to wonder why more chairs aren’t given the same sort of shape. Well, at least the more casual designs for kitchens, anyway. The lightweight and stackable frames already have those benefits going for them, but what makes this object truly distinctive is its atypically modeled seat.
Instead of terminating at a straight or slightly curved edge, the front of the seat has a smooth notch removed in the center. Who needs support there anyway? The adjustment gives the piece of furniture a great deal more versatile to accommodate up to twice and many people at supper. A Smart Chair can be positioned around the corners of a dining table, keeping sitters close to their plates and unbothered by the presence of the four—usually obstructive—legs.
