In this self-control keynote from Dan Ariely, the iconic psychologist and award-winning author discusses the problems with temptation in modern society and how we can attempt to be in charge of our own actions and decisions, both in the long-term and short-term.
As Ariely explains, we have desires and goals for our long-term selves, but the over-focus on the presence and those desires take over. As a result, we constantly sacrifice the future and feel badly about ourselves.
Ariely’s self-control keynote proposes reward substitution and the self-control contract as means to fight off temptation. The self-control contract includes doing something else as a way to avoid bypass the temptations.
Ariely believes that humans are unable to value the future over the presence, but by creating methods and processes to help avoid desires can help.
