The Rowan Corkill Portrait of a Species series depicts an assortment of deceased animals. Among those featured are lifeless squirrels, birds and rabbits, each one dangling from the mouth of the Scotland-based photographer.
Portrait of a Species draws its inspiration from Corkill’s own preoccupation with antiques and taxidermy pieces, prompting him to focus on the morose side of animal life, or lack thereof. He in this way aims to re-purpose objects that most would take to be disposable, re-imagining them here in novel ways.
Interestingly, Corkill takes himself to be the focus of the project as his pictures are all of self-portraits. This offers a direct look at who is responsible for the eccentric collection.
