The hour takes center stage in Mert Gutav’s ROTA Watch concept. The ROTA Watch is a refreshingly easy-to-read timepiece that places function over form. There are no hands on the ROTA Watch; hours and minutes are shown in circles. The hours are in the center of the watch’s face while the minutes rotate around the center encased in a small circle. The resulting design has more in common with the planet Earth (moon rotating around the sun) than it does with any of today’s watches or tomorrow’s concepts.
The ROTA Watch’s function-first design also includes a night vision mode that lights up the watch’s hours and minutes making them easier to read. The ROTA Watch appears to be just a concept, but I wouldn’t be shocked if its stripped-down design and emphasis on functionality first became the norm rather than the exception for watch designers.
