Public Rooftop Bus Gardens
Phytokinetic Technology on Public Buses Improves Air Quality

By: Alyson Wyers (Superstar) Aug 7, 13
{SummaryTitle}

Phytokinetic, designed by landscaper Marc Granen, turns the condensation from air conditioning into water irrigation for this bus rooftop garden. Used exclusively on public buses, this technology is ideal for urban spaces and cities lacking in green space because the garden helps purify the air. When the air conditioning isn’t running, the rooftop gardens can be watered manually so the air can continue to benefit from the plant life.

The gardens are able to stay in place thanks to micro-perforated stainless steel bands and extremely light weight mesh. Phytokinetic also uses a heavy but also lightweight hydroponic foam, which weighs less than soil and can be shaped to fit the buses’ roofs.

This design is currently featured on a tourist bus that transports tourists in Spain to and from a camping site.
