Colossal Ice Castles
These Roger Hanson Sculptures are Incredible Geothermal Ice Creations

By: Jordan M (Rockstar) Mar 4, 11

Roger Hanson’s unbelievable ice castles are more than just your average wintertime art creations. Made using a geothermal heating system, some sprinklers and a computer program, his towering masterpieces have been known to reach heights of up to 65 feet.

Each year, ‘Hanson’s Winter Water Wonder’ features increasingly large creations, as Roger Hanson continues to push the boundaries of ice architecture to new and exciting frontiers.

What is most impressive about Roger Hanson’s work, however, is that it is all made possible by his home’s geothermal heating system. Geothermal power takes heat from natural groundwater in order to heat homes, but its by-product is cold water. By manipulating sprinklers that are strategically set up outside his home via increasingly complex programming, Roger Hanson is able to turn this previously useless side-effect into beautifully elaborate, albeit temporary, artwork.
