Gritty Nintendo Nemeses
Nekoixa Renders Badass Versions of Super Mario Villains

By: Jason Soy (Rockstar) Jan 17, 12

Gamers may not find the enemies of Super Mario that menacing when looking at 8-bit or 16-bit graphics, but these Nekoixa illustrations are sure to change their minds. Rendering them using a combination of inks and digital paint brushes, the Japanese artist morphs the Hammer Bros., Bowser and an army of Bob-ombs into total badasses. Suddenly, a game about a plumber jumping around to save a princess isn’t so cheerful.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect about these video game depictions is the perspectives in which Nekoixa has chosen to portray each enemy. Viewers look at the subjects head on as opposed to the usual side profile they’re accustomed to seeing the game characters.

Nekoixa’s illustrative style is gritty and urban. His depictions of the Nintendo foes can easily adorn a building side as graffiti and it would not be out of place.
