Futuristic Education Facilities
Kristin Jarmund Architects Create a Modern High School

By: Marissa Liu (Rockstar) Oct 15, 09
{SummaryTitle}

Oslo-based Architect Kristin Jarmund designed a sleek and modern high school in Gjerdrum, Norway. The compact plan invites activity and use. The main entrance leads into a circular open schoolyard atrium at the center of the building. The rooms in the school vary in composition and promoted openness and connectivity within the school landscape.

The Gjerdrum Secondary School is a modern high school with a very organic shape. The roof is shaped to seem like part of the surrounding terrain folded up from the ground. The tilted wall towards the south becomes the stands that surround a sports field. The compact building volume has created short distances and almost no corridors. Some of the rooms are outdoor atriums cut out of the building—what the architect calls, “inverse”—to allow daylight to penetrate the modern high school.
