Luminescent Leaf Installations
Artist Miya Ando Released a Flotilla of Glowing Leaves into a Pond

By: Tia Clarke (Star) May 7, 13

This naturalistic installation by artist Miya Ando saw her travel to Puerto Rico and release 1,000 leaves into a small pond. This might sound pretty standard, but it’s at nighttime when this beautiful installation really comes to life. The artist coated the leaves with phosphorescence, which means they glow like fireflies on the water at night.

As you can see from the images, the leaves soaked up light from the suns rays during the day and were glowing in brilliant blue light once nighttime took hold. The artist says the unusual installation was inspired by a Japanese Buddhist festival, which uses glowing flowers and leaves to honor one’s ancestors and spirits.

For such a simplistic idea, this peaceful artwork sure has a lot of impact. Miya Ando is a New York City based artist who has exhibited all around the world.
