It wouldn’t be surprising in the least if Miguel Angel Sanchez was mistaken for a 17th century painter. In fact, people will surely find it more surprising that he is in fact a modern-day artist, not to mention that his chosen tool is not the paintbrush, but a camera instead.
This Spanish photographer has taken it upon himself to capture contemporary Cairo society through the lens of the past. Miguel Angel Sanchez says, “My work is the result of my love for the Spanish baroque imagery and the Italian and Spanish naturalism by Caravaggio and Ribera. It’s a tribute to those Spanish paintings, where myth and reality mixed to create an intermediate state that I try to translate in images.”
