Colossal Metal Snake Sculptures
The 'Ressort' Sculpture Dwarfs a Room with a 170 Feet High Frame

By: Alexander Lam (Star) May 28, 13
{SummaryTitle}

In an effort to introduce Chinese influences to the West, artist Huang Yong Ping created a 170 feet high metal snake called ‘Ressort.’ The work was commissioned for the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art and was chosen because of its importance in Chinese culture. Ping developed the sculpture to dominate the room without overpowering it. With an enormous snake to work with, Pint accomplished a very difficult task.

The serpent sculpture is made entirely from the lightweight aluminum. Instead of simulating a live snake, Ping created the skeleton of a snake. Each part of its massive frame is suspended by thin wires extending to the ceiling giving the sculpture a sense of movement. With the snake suspended over water, the sculpture gives off a calming and surreal feel while still being extremely aggressive.
