Wound-Up Figurine Fashion
Mechanical Dolls by Tim Walker Plays Dress-Up with Human Models

By: Amelia Roblin (Superstar) Oct 12, 11

This editorial in the October 2011 issue of Vogue Italia is all dolled up—literally. Mechanical Dolls by Tim Walker features a collection of surreal spreads in which two models pose as fragile wind-up playthings.

Audrey Marnay and Kirsi Pyrhonen are styled in an unusual lineup of vintage outfits that come from French, British and even Japanese fashions, assembled to give the girls an exquisite appearance and the impression of remarkably dainty frames. Their faces are painted chalk white and accented with striking eyeshadows and lipsticks. Elaborate hairstyles and theatrical hats enhance the more delicate accessories, and in some of the images the viewer can see the presence of the models’ metal cranks. Mechanical Dolls by Tim Walker presents a frozen and artificial femininity which exudes a beauty and a eerie quality simultaneously.
