Toronto-based artist Matt Bahen recently created a series of oil paintings depicting the sombre, fading beauty of decay. The works are currently on exhibition at the LE Gallery in Toronto under the title ‘After the Wolves.’
Matt Bahen uses the medium of oil painting to great effect; he creates a palpable sense of texture which is often absent from digital renderings, water-colors or even pencil and charcoal drawings. This gives the viewer a visceral sense of being there, of having some personal connection with the scenes Matt Bahen depicts.
All of the paintings in the series convey forlorn scenes, forgotten by the world and left to wither against the sands of time. In a few paintings, Matt Bahen portrays once proud cathedrals fading into the past as surely and easily as wisps of smoke into the air. In others he depicts only a field, the absence of things that once were.
