Upcycled Leather Canisters
Matka Vases are Made Using High-Quality Scrap Materials

{SummaryTitle}

Dutch designer Pepe Heykoop is working with one of Mumbai’s poorest neighborhoods to create Matka vases. These vases combine the country’s traditional steel water carriers, or Matkas, with high quality scrap leather to create vases unlike any other. The leather covering of the Matka vases was inspired by Heykoop’s own ‘Skin Collection,’ which reused waste leather from the furniture industry.

The project was initiated by Heykoop and the Tiny Miracles Foundation, a charity that aims to bring one Mumbai red-light district into the middle class within the next 10 years. The vases are created by residents of the district who are employed by Heykoop, with a portion of the profits going towards sending street children to schools.
