Feminine Pencil Sketches
The Martine Johanna’s Illustrations are Featured in ‘The Purp

By: Misel Saban (Superstar) Jun 4, 13

Martine Johanna beautifully mixes surrealism and realism in the her avant-garde pencil sketches featured in the art coffee table book ‘The Purple Book: Sensuality & Symbolism in Contemporary Art & Illustration.’

Martine Johanna draws each of her illustrations with various strengths of mechanical pencils and then goes back with soft pastel-colored acrylic paint to enhance the realism of the drawings. While the anatomical features are incredibly realistic, Martine is famous for adding in surreal elements, such as disconnecting the face, adding an extra eye or disjointing the body. With a mix of materials and styles, Martine Johanna’s illustrations are whimsically dream-like representations of womanhood.

Some of the sketches featured in ‘The Purple Book’ include girls exhaling cotton candy-like pink smoke, girls with silvery white hair and girls with barely anything on embracing their bodies and posing seductively.
