Fashion-Forward Orthopedic Corsets
Austrian Designer Marina Hormanseder Was Inspired by Small Pox

By: Meghan Young (Superstar) Jun 25, 13

Austrian fashion designer Marina Hormanseder has created a line of corsets that are wildly experimental. Essentially, the collection combines fashion with function in such a way that the results are akin to wearable art. Marina Hormanseder was inspired by the epidemic of small pox and the orthopaedic corsets that were invented to help patients.

Created for her graduation collection at Esmod Berlin International University of Art for Fashion, Marina Hormanseder’s corsets carry a deeper meaning. The designer states, “Orthopedics don’t have to be a style no-go. I think handicaps shouldn’t be left out of sight—not on a catwalk—and I hope this will increase awareness.” Hence the line of helmets, straps, and studs made to keep limbs supported while ruffled sleeves and hoods represent various forms of dermatitis.
