Digital 3D Photocopiers
The Makerbot Digitizer Scans Items for Making a 3D-Printed Copy

By: Michael Hemsworth (Superstar) Aug 28, 13

3D printing requires an extensive computer rendering to be completed before starting the process, but the Makerbot Digitizer takes the hassle out of the process by being able to copy any item by scanning the surface structure. Working like a 3D photocopier, the Makerbot Digitizer takes the complex process behind 3D printing out of the equation and replaces it with a product that’s simple to use with no training required.

The Makerbot Digitizer works by an item being placed on the turntable-like surface and having the digital eye scan the entirety of it. From here, the data can be correlated with a 3D printer—like the Makerbot Replicator 2—and the process can be put forth to copy a product as many times as desired.
