Metaphorical Cardboard Sculptures
Laurence Vallieres Turns Societal Issues into Cardboard Animals

By: Marica Zottino (Apprentice) May 30, 13

Animal trophies belong to human archetypal imagery of luscious, burgeois mansions and still possess a great fascination, and Laurence Vallieres plays off of this theme with her cardboard pieces.

Ceramic, plastic and knit animal heads have all made an impression, but these cardboard sculptures by Laurence Vallieres are a plus. Impressively well refined, these pieces are meant to captivate the eye of the viewer at a first glance while at the same time making him or her reflect a little about contemporary society.

Laurence Vallieres, in fact, declares that she uses animal imagery as a metaphor to represent political issues and social behaviours, taking inspiration from literature and poetry. Her subjects are monkeys, rhinoceroses and elephants, animals that should easily make people relate them to their human or ideological correspondents.
