Kyotaro Hakamata creates sculptures that will innately appeal to younger generations. Full of vibrant colors, quirky forms and a touch of a pop culture essence, the contemporary works of arts are undeniably youthful. Nevertheless, Kyotaro Hakamata undoubtedly has a wider audience than teens and young adults.
Born in Shizuoka, Japan, and based in Tokyo, Kyotaro Hakamata may appear playful at first, but there is a lot more going on behind the surface. Made up of variously colored acrylic boards, Kyotaro Hakamata observes for Volta NY, “The stripes of the surface created by such a process deform and delude viewers’ visions when they try to see the shape of the work.[...] So here, you can see the contradictory relationship: the consequence of the basic process of making sculpture destroys the viewers’ visions.”
