Surreal Cartoon Creature Sculptures
Takahiro Komuro's Art Depicts Unsettling Humanoid Monsters

By: Amanda Greer (Star) May 29, 13

There is something very uncanny about humanoid monsters. They seem to scare people more than inhuman creatures, possibly because human viewers can see bits of themselves embedded into the creatures’ bodies. Japanese artist Takahiro Komuro has demonstrated this fear of human-like monsters with his latest sculptures, all of which depict creatures that are almost human but differ in some way. A few have tentacles covering their faces; one has green eyes and is child-like but for her gray hair and another is completely human-looking but stands naked with a gigantic serpent wrapped around her neck.

By taking something as familiar as the human body and altering it in unfamiliar ways, Takahiro Komuro has created some unforgettable art that, while unsettling, also retains a cartoon-like quality due to its vibrant colors and smooth texture. It’s impossible to forget these humanoid monsters and their striking resemblance to everyday life.
