If the German company ‘CargoLifter’ is successful with its plans, helium-powered airships could be carrying freight and passengers on a regular basis. The Germans aren’t the only ones interested in using blimps in place of other aircraft. Boeing and Lockheed Martin are working on designs. The US Department of Defense is also interested in the potential of blimps to deliver cargo.
Helium-powered airships fell out of favor after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, but their use could cut greenhouse gas emissions and help to de-carbonize industrial transportation.
