Dollhouse Vacuum Cleaners
Artist Frank Halmans Explores Domestic Life Through Dirt and Debris

{SummaryTitle}

Dollhouses are often viewed as cherished toys kept immaculately clean in order to put on display; Dutch artist Frank Halmans has other ideas. He has created modern dioramic complexes and attached them to working vacuum cleaners. Complete with miniature furniture, Frank Halmans uses the vacuums to suck dirt into the dollhouses.

Although this might seem rather counterintuitive, Frank Halmans’ work explores the domestic world while commenting on the private and public realms of such life. By blurring the lines of the interior and exterior, Frank Halmans encourages people to think about the lives they lead. More than that, Andrea of Design Boom writes, “dirt and the debris is purposely sucked into [...]these imagined dwellings, standing as a metaphor for the things which we experience and collect mentally in our memory and physically in our lives.”
