With the advent of cheap photography and social media, anyone can take and share photos regardless of their quality. A clever advertising campaign for South African newspaper Cape Times has run with this idea, and re-imagined important historical photographs as if they had been Facebook or Instagram-style self-shoots.
The motto of the campaign is “you can’t get any closer to the news,” and the photographs include the recent Royal Wedding, and the famous kiss from VJ day, all altered to feature one of the subjects holding their arm out, taking the photograph with their own camera.
It’s a clever, funny and eye-catching campaign that also serves to highlight the inherent humor in some of the amateur portraits found in modern social media.
