Outstretching Lifesavers
The Expand Lifebuoy Casts off Extra Handles for a Reach-Free Rescue

By: Amelia Roblin (Superstar) Mar 8, 13

How often does a rescuer really land a life ring in a helpful spot the first time he throws it? The Expand Lifebuoy saves precious time with a design that spreads out before it splashes against the water, making even lousier launches useful.

Lin Hong-Wei and Min Hao-Siang began with the conventional form of a donut-shaped floatation device with red and white stripes. This, however, was accessorized with lengthy loops of rope and handles attached to four sides. These are all secured to the hoop when it’s stored, accessed and tossed, but the force of it spinning through the air is enough to loosen and release these components so that they extend outwards across a greater ocean surface. The Expand Lifebuoy requires fewer tosses by the lifeguard, less swimming by the victim, and it can rope in multiple people to tow them to shore.
