Ewa Doroszenko has managed to capture simulated tortures, which happens to be the title of this raw and powerful art series. More than simple photographs, the series is comprised of self-portraits of Ewa Doroszenko’s own body in the fetal position. These portraits have been combined with other stylistic elements to create a three-dimensional effect that is at once arresting and unsettling. Through the use of needles, thread and more, Ewa Doroszenko mutilates the photos of her body to, that’s right, simulate torture.
Hailing from Warsaw, Poland, Ewa Doroszenko quotes a passage from Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ ‘Women Who Run With the Wolves’ to explain her work, “Even the most captured woman guards the place of the wildish self, for she knows intuitively that someday there will be a loophole, an aperture, a chance, and she will hightail it to escape.”
