Devastated Transit Terminals
Epanalepsis Shakes its Neighborhood with an Architectural Earthquake

By: Amelia Roblin (Superstar) Dec 14, 12

Architecture doesn’t always have to involve the process of putting things down upon the ground, rather it can conceptually and successfully explore construction through excavation. Epanalepsis by Tan Akinci is an attempt to unify the many built and landscaped sections of a Vienna neighborhood with a striking public plaza taking strange hybrid forms.

The Westbahnhof Train Station specifically is the core of the project, servicing a shopping district, offices, museums, parks and a church. And while the seemingly confused and convoluted design of the new structure might perplex the observer at first, he would find that the largely open plan arrangement affords few opportunities to become lost in the monumental mess. The compelling Epanalepsis by Tan Akinci demonstrates a brave and engrossing treatment of site by churning it up completely.
