This Digital Copyright Keynote by Cory Doctorow Explores Internet Laws

By: Sarah Moore (Star) Jun 28, 12

Cory Doctorow begins his digital copyright keynote by saying that debating whether society needs rules to govern the use of the Internet is irrelevant and what should be instead be discussed is what rules are both wanted and needed.

The digital media expert delves into what makes a good copyright law and argues that it is one which serves to both promote creativity and protect the work of those who create goods and services.

In Doctorow’s digital copyright keynote, he explores the problems that arise when attempting to protect the rights of the creator infringes upon the rights of the user. With the Internet holding the role of the propagator of information, and the creator’s main goal being the curator of that content, copyright law must fall somewhere in between protecting the rights of the creator without completely disallowing the use of that product by the consumer.
