There is an obvious irony about the CRAC Project by Alexandre Moronnoz that concerns the message it sends and its very production. The designer conceived the piece to symbolically represent the problem of clear-cutting, yet the object required timber as the primary material in its assembly.
Made of ash, the low table comprises a montage of narrowly sawed lumber strips to form a solid mass of over 130 centimeters in length. One can appreciate the beauty of the wood grain pattern across its surfaces, juxtaposed against the obviously artificially induced cracking and splintering ends.
Cut as an otherwise perfect rectangular prism, the CRAC Project by Alexandre Moronnoz is a paradox in both its physical and symbolic essence. The photos depict the prototype for the Paris Design Week 2012. Its mass production would add another heavy layer to its message.
