Sweeping Desert Dwellings
The Brown Residence is Defined by No Boundaries with Broad Fenestration

By: Amelia Roblin (Superstar) May 31, 12

Formal elements of Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright are abundant in the Brown Residence, which offers a seductive summary of modernist architecture with the crisp execution of the contemporary period. Surrounded in the raw topography of an Arizona gold course, it expresses a strong horizontality with a firm confidence Miesian.

Taking cues from the Prairie Style and the International Style, the Lake|Flato house expands between its planar plot and its sweeping flat roof. This level lid stretches out into tantalizingly lengthy overhangs that allude to the infinite extension of the line. Beneath it are walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that appear to let the interior of the abode continue on into the landscape. Sunlight floods into the Brown Residence from all angles to give the structure the impression of an open pavilion.
