One might think it a challenge to employ the techniques of working with natural materials to manipulating industrial objects, and no doubt the process of constructing the Bamboo-Steel Table was difficult and delicate work. Inspired by the practice of splicing stalks of the giant woody grass and weaving the ends together, this set of side tables is intricately assembled from thin ribbons of a whole single metal rod.
If you look at the center of the Nendo piece, you can see how the steel tube splays out into rays of its own strips. Entwined with these are segments of the same material that form a lovely lattice pattern into the Bamboo-Steel tabletop they form.
