The Aurelien Juner 'Surfaces' Series Explores Mass Culture

By: Josh Triantafilou (Star) Apr 2, 12

In her ‘Surfaces’ series French designer Aurelien Juner explores the relationship between mass culture imagery and reality. Fashion magazine covers, blogs, websites, posters and billboards all convey some idealized, essentially fictional, depiction of beauty. The Surfaces series seeks to demonstrate this to the viewer.

Aurelien Juner is no stranger to fashion or mass culture either. Much of her wider work touches on these themes. In Surfaces, however, there is pointed effort to delve into the nature of mass culture. In many pieces, Aurelien Juner depicts magazine covers as fractured stone-like tablets. Broken promises of beauty and contentment, perhaps? This imagery is a good representation of the series; that is, Aurelien Juner manages to explore deep themes in a visceral, almost personable way.
